Frequently Asked Questions

When will the Angelus Film Festival happen?

Parish venues can schedule a film festival or parish film nights when it suits the parish calendar. A film festival event usually consists of one movie a week for 4 weeks, more or less films can be selected. With the large selection of films, parish venues may choose to run parish film nights to celebrate important feast days as well. Generally, the best time of the year for a film festival event is in Ordinary time, from May (following the feast of Divine Mercy) to September (prior to NRL and AFL finals)

How does a parish venue register for “The Angelus Film Festival?”

Simply fill in this registration form

Can a group of neighbouring parishes run the event at an agreed venue and share the costs?

Yes

Does it cost to register for “The Angelus Film Festival?”

No It does not cost to register an interest to participate in the Angelus Film Festival. If a parish venue decides to register and does not wish to participate there is no cost.

Parish venues are encouraged to register as soon as possible and preferably several weeks prior to a parish film night and several months prior to a film festival event.

Does it cost to participate in “The Angelus Film Festival?”

Yes there will be a fee for the screening of each film at a parish venue and an administration fee to host the event. A fee will need to be paid each time a film is screened as part of the film festival event. The screening fee will be based on the parish venue capacity. The fees for screening a film are; $130 for venues with 30 - 50 people, $250 for venues with 51 - 150 people, $450 for venues with 151 - 300 people and $500 for venues with more than 300 people.

The administration fee is $200 (this includes assistance with promotion, curating films etc) for the screening of 4 films. In some instances when international transfer and foreign exchange rate fees apply a surcharge will be added.

Does it cost to HOST A PARISH FILM NIGHT?

Yes the fees to view films for parish film night events are also based on venue capacity and are the same as the fees to screen a film at a film festival event (as above). There is no administration fee. Except a surcharge will be added when international transfer and foreign exchange rate fees apply.

What Films will the event be making available?

The Angelus Film Festival will be featuring films with Catholic themes from around the world. Currently, there are over 25 films available. Some of the films have won awards at international Christian film festivals such as Mirabile Dictu (Vatican International Catholic Film Festival). Given the international nature of Christianity some films are foreign language with English sub-titles etc.

How does a parish venue run the Angelus Film Festival?

1) Check if your parish priest and parish community are interested to run the event or perhaps the event can be run in partnership with other interested parishes in the area to share a venue.

2) Check if you have a parish venue available to host the event.

3) Check if the parish venue has options for a big screen set-up, appropriate seating, a good internet connection etc. Check if the venue can stream films from the modem via an ethernet cable to a laptop and via a HDMI cable to a projector etc. Check appropriate configuration with the technical person at your parish venue.

4) Check if parishioners are keen to volunteer to assist with selling tickets, organizing food, drinks etc.

5) Perhaps some local musicians would also like to perform at the event or an art exhibition could accompany the event, parishioners may wish to share food etc.

6) Other things to consider; ideally the movie screen should be elevated, especially if the film is foreign language and has English subtitles at the bottom of the screen. An elevated screen will make it easier for the audience to see the screen and read the text. Appropriate lighting, especially if windows are not covered during the screening of movies etc.

7) The Angelus Film Festival can provide draft film festival posters for venues and is not responsible for the completion of the posters. Draft film festival posters will be provided via Canva only.

8) Most film festival movies run for about 90 minutes. These details will be made availabe to registered parish venues. Longer films may require an intermission.

9) A promotional before the movie clip will be screened prior to each movie. The promotional clip will include some clips from partners and sponsors of the Angelus Film Festival.

10) Participating parishes will be offered the opportunity to sell Parousia media merchandise at the film festival.

How many films must a parish venue select?

This is optional. If a parish venue wishes to host a film festival event, it could screen one film a week for 4 weeks (4 films), but a parish can select more films or less if they wish. A fee will still need to be paid for the screening of each film and an administration fee to host the event.

Alternatively, parish venues may choose to host parish film nights and not participate in a film festival event.

What is the schedule for running a film festival evening?

This is up to the local parish, but as a general guide. it is recommended to begin screening the films around 7pm. Parishioners may wish to bring a plate or organize some food before the film. It is recommended to begin the evening with a meal and social time (usually about 30 minutes) prior to starting the movie (most movies are between 1.5 – 2 hours). A 10 minute intermission is recommended for movies longer than 2 hours. Following the movie it is great to have a chat or small group discussions about the film, share some coffee, tea, supper etc.

Can parish venues sell tickets to raise money?

Yes all money raised via ticket sales, fundraising etc can be used by the organising parish/group of parishes.

Will the Angelus Film Festival acquire a percentage of ticket sales and local sponsorship?

No.

Parish venues can include local sponsor logos on the film festival posters and make announcements prior to the promotional before the movie clip. Interested sponsors can also approach the Angelus Film Festival to have company logos in the promotional before the movie clip at venues in the diocese or nationally (sponsorship fees apply).

How will the films be made available?

Parish venues confirmed to participate will receive a link and password to view the film. The films will be streamed via internet connection, so the parish venue will need a very good internet connection.

What type of configuration will parish venues need to stream the films?

The venue could include a projector which can connect to a laptop via HDMI cable and an ethernet cable from the laptop to the modem or something similar. Please consult with the technical person responsible for the venue.

Note: Wireless connectivity is not reliable enough when streaming films and may cause the transmission to freeze and drop out.

Your network connection should sustain a download speed of at least 20 Mbps to view the simulcast. The movie file will be emailed to you prior to your event so you will have time to test the movie.
